Stilbaai (Still Bay)
Our town is situated on the Southern Cape coast, Western Cape, South Africa, and it is renowned for its beautiful, safe beaches, as well as the excellent condition of our estuary, the Goukou River, and our very low crime rate. The closest large town is Mosselbay, 100 km from here, and then George, 150 km away, which has an airport connecting us to the major cities of South Africa. To the West, is Cape Town, 340 km away, which has an international airport, and is a world heritage site (Table Mountain).

Our main beach has International Blue Flag status, of which we are truly proud. This status is hard to come by, and strict rules are applied in order to qualify, which include the standard (purity) of the sea water, the safety of the beach, the life guard facilities, the first aid facilities, toilet facilities, etc. We have the only Blue Flag beach between Jeffrey's Bay in the Eastern Cape, and Hermanus in the Western Cape, a distance of about 700 km. Visitors can enjoy our temperate climate, and warm water, and soak up the sun on our beautiful white sandy beaches, which stretch from the river mouth to the East for about 3 km. Surfing is good at Morris point, and surfers come from as far Cape Town to enjoy the excellent waves. Kite surfing is also very popular, especially when the South-Easter is blowing.

The Goukou estuary is home to a large number of marine species, some of which are very rare. The fish species found here include popular edible fish such as kob, spotted grunter, steenbras (pig nose grunter), elf (shad), leervis (garrick), and a variety of smaller fish. Kob of over 50 kg (110lbs) have been landed many times by anglers from river boats. The estuary is approximately 17 km long, and is the lower part of the Goukou river, which has it's origins in the Langeberg mountains near Riversdale (40 km).

Fishing is good along our lovely coast line, from the beach, the rocks, or the open sea. Chatered sea boats are available to those who prefer fishing or spearfishing from a boat. We have a small harbour for ski-boats, under control of our Marine & Coastal Management, where professional and leisure fisherman can launch their boats. Fresh fish can also be bought daily at the harbour.
We have many walking trails, short walks around Stilbaai, or longer walks along the coast, from Stilbaai to Jongensfontein, about 10 km. From Jongensfontein you can walk for about 20 to 30 km along the Blombos coast, and many more. There are also 4 x 4 trails for the motoring and motor cycle enthusiasts. Cruising up the river is a popular event for many holidaymakers, as you can make a distance of about 17 km.
At Skulpiesbaai (Shelly Beach), we have the ancient Koisan fish traps, dating back several thousand years (some say more than 2 000 years, others think it could be 10 000 years). These people, who's decendants still live in the area, built the traps from stones, which were placed in flat rocky areas, where fish would move in when the tides were high to hunt or graze, and be trapped when the tides receded. They are still maintained today, and fish are still caught in the traps.

We have a unique show of hand-fed eels at our Infomation Centre, where visitors can see the staff of the centre feeding the eels, daily at 11H00. These eels have blue eyes, and have inhabited the fountain for probably tens of thousands of years, perhaps much longer. They arrive here as young eels, from as far away as Mozambique's warm shores, 2 000 kms from here. When they reach breeding maturity, they swim back to Mozambique to lay their eggs and die. This is much like the salmon crossing the Atlantic to breed and die.

Business, Commerce, & Industry:
Our town is growing at a reasonably fast rate, and future growth seems to be a certainty. We have 2 large supermarkets, a number of convenience stores, 2 pharmacies, doctors consulting rooms, dentists, opticians, real estate agencies, at least 10 eating places, filling station, clothing shops, fast food outlets, butchers, stationers, post office, internet cafes, vehicle repairs, hardware and building supply stores, police station, National Sea Rescue Intsitute, municipality, library, gift & curio shops, carpenters & cabinet makers, welding works, a strong building industry, and many more.
